Orchid Care at a Glance

Light

  • Failure to re-bloom is commonly due to a short duration of light, not intensity.

  • 12-14 hrs. Of light at correct levels are optimum, but not necessary.

  • Orchids excel when grown under artificial lights.

Minimum duration required for the 3 major light levels

Low: 4 hours direct filtered light. 1000—1500 fc   direct sun until 9 or 10am and after 5 or 6pm. Shade mid-morning to late afternoon.

Medium: 6 hours direct filtered light. 1700—2500 fc   direct sun until 10 or 11am and after 4 or 5pm. Dappled shade during mid-day.

High Light:  8 hours direct filtered light. 2700+fc   direct sun all morning and after 3pm. Light dappled shade during mid-day.

Watering

  • Death of plant is commonly due to over-watering.

  • Withhold water during the winter or cool, cloudy periods.

  • Water liberally during periods of warm, bright, windy weather.

  • Allow orchid to dry according to water requirements otherwise.

Evenly Moist:  Water heavily as media approaches dryness. Dry pots should have been watered the day before. Especially true during periods of high temps. Allow to almost dry out when cloudy and cool. Generally orchids with thin leaves and roots and without pseudo bulbs.

Wet/Dry: Water heavily after media has dried out unless the temps and light levels are high. Allow to sit dry for a few days during cloudy, cool periods. Especially true during winter. Orchids with pseudo bulbs for water storage, thick leaves and roots.

Temperature

  • 65F minimum daytime temp needed for photosynthesis.

  • 10 degree difference between day and night temp beneficial.

  • Some orchids need a drop in nighttime temp to initiate blooming.

Cool: Max temp 80F. Minimum night temp 30’s.

Intermediate: Max temp of 90F. Minimum night temp 30’s.

Warm: Max temp 110F. Minimum night temp 50’s.

Fertilizer

  • Feed during periods of active plant growth and optimum light conditions.

  • Use a blossom or bloom-booster type fertilizer at 50% strength.

  • Supplement with Epsom salts 1 tsp/gal water in spring and fall.
