My carry weapon. This was the Xtreme Duty package, so it came with one 16rd hi-cap mag, with the grip extension, one 10rd compact mag, OWB holster, double mag pouch, speedloader, and a bore snake. I've got a Pearce grip extension on order for the compact mag, as my pinky can't get a good grip. This gun is tiny, but the recoil isn't that bad.

I carry in a
Comp-tac CTAC holster, which is IWB. Nice and secure. I plan to get another compact mag & Pearce extension, and then a pouch for carrying it since pocket carry for spare mag doesn't float my boat.

I traded my SigPro 2009 for an XD 4" .45ACP. I could not shoot the sp2009 well enough to feel 'safe' with it as my bedside gun. That fat grip and heavy DAO trigger sucked. I'm a little better shot with the XD, but the .45 really beats the shit outta my hand.

SIG Mosquito

Photo taken February 14, 2006

The Mosquito I bought for my wife for Valentine's Day.

Because I am aware many Mosquito owners have issues with certain ammo feeding/ejecting properly, I'm going to track my findings here. In some cases I'll list the same ammo multiple times due to changing the spring, oiling the ammo, or because I tried the ammo again after the initial 1,000rd break-in.

I will also say that One Shot brand case lube (found with reloading supplies) makes for a good lubricant. It 'dries', so it doesn't feel oily or seem to rub off on your hands when loading magazines. Plus, its meant for case lubrication, where-as WD-40 is a generic, sub-par lube. WD-40 works too, but I'd use it in a pinch, not regularly.

Several members of Sigforum.com have emailed me their results with various ammo in their Mosquito. These results have a visitor submission tag after them.

Ammo Spring Oiled Comments
CCI Mini-MagsHeavyNo40 gr. solid or hollow pt., copper jacket - $5.99/100. Shoot flawlessly, 250 rds in one session, one misfeed, likely due to my wife limp-wristing it, and still in 'break-in' period. In fact it was the first time we shot it with the heavy spring. Both solid and HP shot fine.
CCI Green TagLightNolead ball, solid point, Competition grade - $9.99/100. Tried 20 rds at the range, no problems.
CCI StingersHeavyNo32 gr., copper jacket, hollow pt. - $4.99/50. Many fail to fires...appears to be too light a strike, as the case was dented a little. A second tap fired the rounds. A couple FTE's. These are a silver casing.
CCI VelocitorHeavyNoSPEER Gold Dot HP, copper jacket - $3.99/50. Not good. 3 failure to feed, mid mag, requiring mag to be dropped and round put back in mag. One round jammed in a way that the case was crimped. I could actually rotate the slug in the case. Another had the case bent badly, un-fireable round. Last round I shot, some unburned powder stung my hand when it was ejecting.
CCI BlazersLightYes40gr. lead ball, solid pt. - $9.99/500. I mostly used these and CCI Mini-mags to break in the gun. As long as these were lightly oiled (WD-40), they shot fine. If not oiled, the first round cycled by the gun would often fail to eject. Oiled it was fine. - Another sigforum.com member reported 100 rounds, with no failures of any kind.
Federal Champion High VelocityLightNo40gr. lead ball, solid pt. - $12/500. At first I used the heavier spring with these and kept experiencing failures to eject right from the get go. Put the lighter spring back in and had failures to feed. Manual said not to lube higher velocity ammo but at this point I lubed em with WD40. It fed better, but I would still get the occasional FTF (stovepipes) and FTE. - visitor submission
Federal Champion High VelocityHeavyNo40gr. lead ball, solid pt. - $12.88/500. Shot 20 rounds, had 15 FTF’s, failed to eject, or failed to loads. Same behavior with light spring installed. This ammo does not work well at all in my mosquito. Ended up giving it away to a friend for his rifle. - Holty from Sigforum.com
Federal 'Value'LightYes36 gr. copper plated, hollow pt - $9.99/525 loose-box. Shot fine with oil (One Shot case lube). Not a single misfeed in approx 200 rds shot in one session.
Federal 'Value'LightNoHad same feed issues as un-oiled CCI Blazer...first 2-3 rounds of each magazine may not eject or feed. After 3 mags, switched ot case lubed ammo and it was smooth sailing.
Federal 'Value'HeavyNoShooting with the heavy spring and no lubricant, these had issues ejecting and a couple failures to lock slide on an empty mag.
Federal 'Value'HeavyYesShooting with the heavy spring and case lube, these had a few feed issues.
Federal AutoMatchLightNo40 gr. lead bullet - $9.99/325 loose-box. Shot very well. No problems ejecting or feeding. Pretty much on par with Green Tag, but way cheaper.
Federal AutoMatchHeavyNoHad one failure to eject out of 30 rds. I think this stuff shoots better with the light spring.
PMC ScoremasterunknownNo10rds fired - 3 of 10 FTE.- visitor submission
PMC ZapperLightnoOver 100rds fired - No problems. - visitor submission
Remington High Velocity (#1522)HeavyNo40 gr. solid pt. - $1.99/50 loose-box. Absolutely horrible. Out of 50rds, 3 were FTF, the ridges on the slug seems to get caught feeding, to the point it shaved off a piece of the jacket. See photo of damaged ammo I'm glad it didn't feed, or that could have been bad news for the barrel. Do not shoot this in the Mosquito!
"Only 4 FTE/FTFeed in 500 rds - visitor submission
Remington Golden BulletsHeavyYesLubed with Remington lubricant (graphite based?) - $10/300rds. No problems. - visitor submission
Remington ThunderboltunknownNo First two mags went well, then on the 3rd mag, FTF, two shots, then FTE FTE. - visitor submission
Remington ViperBothNo300rds. fired. Exact same results as "Federal Champion High Velocity" says. Very frustrating!!- visitor submission
Remington Eley Club ExtraLightNo50rds. fired. Flawless- visitor submission
Remington TargetunknownNo50rds. fired. 30 good shots, on fourth mag, 1 FTE. 5th mag was fine.- visitor submission
Winchester Super-X Std VelocityLightNo500rds fired - I had 2 failures to eject out of the whole brick. Gun was pretty dirty at that point, so no complaints.- visitor submission
Winchester Super-X High VelocityLightNo250rds fired - Flawless. --- 100 rounds, no failures of any kind.- visitor submissions
Winchester Wildcat High VelocityLightNo105rds fired - Wouldn't recommend them to anyone. I usually shoot 500 rds between cleanings, but these had the barrel so thoroughly lined with lead that its was causing the bullets to keyhole after just 100rds. The leads too soft!! Had to use a hammer and tap a cleaning rod through the barrel just to remove the massive amounts of buildup. Then about 20 passes with a brass brush finally got the rest of the lead out. - visitor submission
Winchester Wildcat High VelocityunknownNo10rds fired - FTE on almost every shot. I didn't try more than 10 rounds of this. - visitor submission

Comments

The CCI Blazers were terrible no matter what I did with them. On the plus side, if you're using a Mosquito to train someone, this would be an excellent round to use for clearing drills! Lubed Federal Champion, with the light spring, were excellent. The Federal Value and Remington GB HP weren't bad in that format either with only a single failure to eject.
Remington GB RN were a big disappointment as I'd read several reports of success with them using the heavy spring. Just goes to show that even different pistols of the same brand and model can have different preferences. The biggest surprise was the Winchester Xpert-22. I was ready to hate them as I picked a couple out of the box that had deformed bullets in them (one looked as though the bullet had been sliced in half horizontally somehow). With the light spring they were flawless, and deadly accurate too. I was grouping better with these than I do with the Mini-Mags.

My wife actually picked this one up. Its an awesome looking gun. Its an 'AF' production run, so it should not have any of the issues that early p22's had.

AR-15

This is an AR-15 I built using parts from Stag Arms/CMT. I assembled the lower receiver on June 10, 2006. Took an hour initially after some confusion on a step, and thinking I was missing a part. Then my good friend Andy the tattoo ninja helped me hone down the bolt catch as it was too wide for the slot in the receiver, and the receiver needed a little metal removed from the slot as well.

Stag lower receiver, parts kit, and M4 butt stock with standard buffer spring. Stag Arms upper, configured by Randall at www.ar15barrels.com

It was an interesting experience.
